Brief
Al Ain, United Arab Emirates
Al Ain (Arabic: العين, al-ʿayn, literally The Spring), is the second largest city in the Abu Dhabi Emirate and the fourth largest city in the United Arab Emirates. With a population of 374,000, it is located approximately 160 km east of the capital Abu Dhabi and about 120 km south of Dubai.
Al Ain is the birthplace of H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates, and has long been a destination for many sheikhs of the UAE who enjoy the cooler temperatures as a welcome respite from the rest of the country’s coastal humidity. Aside from the well-appreciated microclimate, Al Ain is often called the ‘Garden City of The Gulf‘ given the many oases, parks, tree-lined avenues and decorative roundabouts within the city. Strict height controls on new buildings, to no more than seven floors, emphasize the greenery of the city. The vibrant and blooming city is yet another reason why so many choose to live here. It offers a beautiful contrast from the often stark and arid desert landscape.
TEDxAlAin | Towards Tomorrow
As the birthplace of the founding father of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Zayed, Al Ain has a more traditional Arabic atmosphere and thus, affords a more authentic experience to visitors and expats alike.
At TEDxAlAin, we hope to capture the cultural essence of Al Ain whilst showcasing the very best of the city in terms of innovation, art, history and culture. Al Ain is fast becoming a major hub in the UAE, where work is already underway on several major infrastructure developments. The city is also aiming to increase its focus on cultural heritage by restoring and promoting many of its existing historical buildings. In the near future, the city of Al Ain hopes to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its rich history.
