Marc and Angel over at Marc and Angel Hack Life have some very simple, yet powerful thoughts to share on the secrets of people who are self-employed, i.e. entrepreneurs.

1. We Only Have 2 Products: Time and Knowledge The bottom line is that customers pay you for your time and knowledge.  Success is achieved by properly crafting the two into one convenient bundle that can be sold many times over (think of products vs. services).

2. The Implementation of Knowledge is Power Knowledge alone is not power!  The implementation of knowledge is power.  Knowledge is simply a commodity; it’s a product like any other that has the potential to be sold.  How knowledge is organized, packaged, presented, shared, and received by others is what makes knowledge so powerful.

3. Time is More Valuable than Money The successfully self-employed have made this realization (time is more valuable than money) and concentrate the majority of their time and effort on the single greatest secret of self-employment: generating passive income. Passive income is achieved by applying what you know into a package that can be designed and built once, and then repeatedly sold over and over again.  Finding a unique way to promote and sell this knowlege is the key.

4. Success is About Knowing What You Want Self-employed success is not the byproduct of working your way up from the ground up.  It’s based on knowing what you want, understanding your abilities and implementing them diligently to achieve your goals.

The Record coverage of the Senator Kirby talk on Mental Illness, Sep 23 2008:

“Even people in the health care professions are inclined to have the same negative opinions of someone with a mental illness as the general public,” said Kirby, the retired Liberal senator who, in March 2007, was appointed by the federal Conservatives to be chair of the new Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Speaking to a crowd at the Kitchener Public Library last night, Kirby said not much has improved in the last 50 years when it comes to treating the mentally ill.

Yet there are economic reasons to make changes. Mental illness costs Ontario as much as $17 billion a year in lost productivity, he said. A full half of all employee sick leaves are related to mental illness.

And consider that one in five Canadians will suffer some sort of mental illness. Or that researchers have established that mental illness can cause physical illness, and vice-versa.

Despite this enormous toll, the vast majority of care for the mentally ill is not handled by hospitals or doctors — it’s done by families, peer groups and clinical psychologists, who don’t receive any taxpayer money for the work.

This conference is hosted by the Laurel Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, a registered non-profit organization based in Waterloo, Ontario, dedicated to fostering the growth of social entrepreneurship in the Waterloo Region, and beyond.

The financial markets were rocked yesterday with news of the Lehman Brothers going under, and Merrill Lynch being sold to Bank of America. One financial analyst, Nouriel Roubini, is predicting the same thing will happen to Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley if they don’t start reaching out to potential bank partners today.
