Two UAE-based teenagers have done the country proud, having been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference being held in Washington DC and New York City from July 28 to August 8, 2002.

Dhruva Suravarapu from Sharjah and Renjie Butalid from Al Ain will be among 350 outstanding scholars worldwide to attend the conference, an official note said.

The event’s theme is The Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for Global Challenges and Responsibility of the Future, with the two lads to interact with key leaders and newsmakers with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy.

Dhruva has just graduated from Westminster School and intends to become an aerospace engineer, while Renjie has recently graduated from the International School of Choueifat.

They will participate in a programme for secondary school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. The focus will be on thought-provoking simulations to build leadership skills.

“The events of September 11 have made it more important than ever for young people to become involved in preventing other similar acts in future,” noted Michael Lasday, Executive Director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, which sponsors the event.

He added the conference challenges students to cross cultural barriers using teamwork to address many conflicts facing the world today.
